Belize: Don’t Go There
Belize, this small country in central America was one of the stops that our cruise ship made,I know they have good diving and fishing, but those are not family stuff. I was very disappointed that there was no beaches to relax at, we asked a cab driver to take us to a beach and we ended up at a mud-hole dug in the ground that the locals hang-out at, if it were not for the local brew it would have been a bust.

I’m very sorry that you did not enjoy your short visit to Belize. However I believe it is unfair for you to make such comments based solely on your few hours spent in my country. Any true Belizean would tell you that to really experience Belize you’d have to spend atleast a few nights here. The truth is the “locals” travel out to the Cayes, or down south to a little village called Placencia to vacation. It is there that you would truely experience the real Belize and the real beach.

We’ve taken our family several times to Belize and the kids love it. We dive, snorkel, canoe and hike in the rain forest, fish, and watch the wildlife in and out of the water. The coral reef of Ambergris is in better condition and has richer sea life than the Great Barrier in Australia. Quickie cruise ship stops do not give tourists time to make a fair judgment of any country. Belizeans are warm and friendly and they have great food and fun music! Actually, we’ve found that most accommodations in Belize are fairly stark but perfectly adequate. People travel to new countries to discover different cultures and broaden their horizons. If all you want is to hang out on a beach or shop, why leave the U.S.?

Maybe you should say “Cruise ship”, don’t take them because you really don’t get to experience any country you stop at whatsoever. We spent a week there, rented a small four-wheel drive, went to spectacular beaches, visited isolated less traveled Mayan ruins, hiked through dense jungle. You know, family stuff.

Your problem was arriving by cruise ship and getting advise from a taxi driver. My wife and I had a great holiday traveling trough Belize by bus and getting our info from a guidebook. My favorites: Crooked Tree (stayed in a room rented by a local), Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary (screened shelter), and Cayo district (tree house). Beautiful country, welcoming people, speak English. What is more to want.

I have never been to Belize, but it seems to me that you did not do your homework befor the trip. You should have done research into what there is that ia appropriate for children the age of your children and if nothing was to your liking, then you should have gone elsewhere. You must take some responsibility for how the tirp turned out.

Really openminded to judge a country by a few hour in a cruise port. I spent som time in Belize this new year, and I absolutely loved it. By the way… Don’t go to USA. I was at Miami Airport and it was horrible, this must mean that the entire country is crap. Right?

I agree with dottie. I do understand your view of Belize however, you were misled. The beauty of Belize is NOT in the city. The Cayes, Placencia and the Rainforest are all full of unbelievable beauty.

Spent 3 nights there when in RAF. It was described as a pimple on the ass hole of the world. They said don’t eat the seafood and don’t drink the local water. Ice in drinks is from the tap and you either have steak or shellfish, I had both. Guess what, got Belize gut on return home, my bum was hanging in tatters. You should see the brown ring that surrounds this place when you look down from the air, its raw sewage, says it all really.

Spent three nights there in 1982 when in RAF, described as a pimple on the backside of the world. They said don’t drink the local water and don’t eat the seafood. Well, ice is made from tap water and you need that in your drinks and you either have steak or seafood for a meal, I had both. Guess what, got Belize gut on my return home, my bum was in tatters. So you took a cruise, got off at port, and are now judging AN ENTIRE COUNTRY by your experience? You’re killing me.
If you want to experience a country, don’t take a cruise. Spend time there and do what the locals do.

first off skip the cruise ship next time !!!!
you should have gotten a small boat to take you out to the many small islands on the reef… incredible beaches, some of the finest diving and snorkling in the world, low crime (if any, never experienced any myself) great music, lots of local “herb” to go with a cold beer while on the beach…
And Belize City was beautiful 50 years ago, just look at all the beautiful wrought iron (now decayed…)
