Hanover, New Hampshire! Twice I have hiked the famed Appalachian Trail on behalf of charitable causes; Florida’s abandoned children and most recently, the American father. Because the Appalachian Trail goes right through Hanover (and the grounds of Dartmouth University), I have to resupply and hopefully, find some rest and a warm shower - especially after hiking several hundred miles of wilderness mountains. The town of Hanover has a citywide policy of NOT accepting hikers from the A.T. at dorms or public grounds; despite Dartmouth University being one of the most famous “outing” clubs in America. They love hikers spending their money in all the local shops and food stores - just don’t stay there! Ughhh…

First of all, it is Dartmouth College, not Dartmouth University. Second of all you are completely off base with your assessment of Hanover. I have personally hosted, and known many friends to host, “through-hikers” in our off-campus housing. Can you blame Dartmouth for not wanted to host strangers in its dorms in this day and age? You must have been one creepy looking dude to not find a place! Hanover is the most beautiful place I have ever lived and is consistently ranked as one of the most desirable locations in the country to live.

Why on earth do you feel a private college should or would allow you to take a shower or sleep in their dorms???
