  1. Is there any way to get out of this El Cid Vacation Club SCAM!
Thanks in advance for any help you may have.

  2. Hi Bill,

I am going through an ordeal with El Cid right now also and so is someone else I know. If you have any contact numbers that you could pass on to me I would greatly appreciate them. Fernando Alonso, the sales personal is a liar and claims that he did not receive my letter to cancel my membership and so the nightmare goes on and on with no one getting back to me and them withholding my downpayment to say nothing of them charging me for maintenance fees and monthly payments. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

  3. Your comments are discouraging to me, as I have just now embarked on trying to get these people to return my calls. I have a new membership, the ink barely dry, and it actually does not start until July of 2009.
We have found that the costs are so high that we can do much better by renting the points from other El Cid members over the internet. Our certificates for cruises are worthless, as the cost to use them exceeds what we could pay booking directly.

I no longer have the ability to pay for this serious mistake, so it looks as if I am in for a run with their collection agency.

  4. NO kidding! Same thing happened to me and my wife. We were met at the ship yard when we disembarked from a NRL cruise. We were told by a very helpful fellow that El Cid wanted to show off the hotel and a free taxi ride, a champagne breakfast and a tour of the hotel was their way of advertising the resort. We left our brains and good sense on the ship and bought the offer hook, line and sinker. We rescinded our offer 3 days later, within the 5 day limit to cancel and have been stonewalled ever since. It just occurred to me how culpable the cruise lines are and I can’t help but think there is some reciprocal arrangement for delivering thousands of Norte Americanos to the Mexican shores as victims of El Cid and other time share snake oil sales programs. I intend to keep on trying to correct my circumstances and will add comments to every site I can find that will take my comments. If El Cid will not respond to my correspondence and calls I will spend the rest of my life advising whoever I can about the scam in Maztlan. Others I have found are victims at Cabo and Peurto Vallarta. Good luck to all who are going that way…

  7. The El Cid Vacation Club sales people are well trained thieves, they use any kind of lies or faudulent behavior to get tourist to buy their “memberships”. After spending about half a day there listening to them with our three children we had agreed to purchase a membership if we were approved by their partnering company RCI, we were declined because I transpossed the last four numbers of my husbands SSN on the application, we were glad because he had changed our minds about the purchase, while the application was being processed. We told the agents we were not buying and left, once we were on the car we realized that we had left our driver licences with them so we came back to get them only to find out that they had corrected my husbands SSN in the application and resubmited it, that it had been approved and according to them, once it was approved we could not longer cancel. they also use intimadated us by telling us that we would be fined the entire deposit amount $23,000.00 dollars if we insiste in cancelling and if we did not make the monthly payments our credit records would be ruined. I had to hire a lawyer, because RCI is refusing to remove the charge from the account even thougth we explain to them that the application was submitted fraudulently and they used lies and intimidation to get us signed their contract

  8. I had the same experience but managed to resist buying in to their deal. We were greeted by Heidi on arrival at the airport. She claimed she could get us free or hugely discounted rates on the swim with the dolphins tour in exchange for a 90 minute presentation which would include lunch.

It took us over an hour to get there by taxi and it was an unpleasant experience. They basically berated me for not taking more trips and vacations with my family. When I explained I truly was not interested in buying points in exchange for vacationing with them at a mere $80,000 US plus maintenance fees, they immediately brought in an alternate plan for $30k US. When I again showed that I was not interested, they tried a cheaper plan and when they realized I still wasn’t budging brought in a sales manager.

I politely explained that I had no intention of buying into their vacation property nor of financing their 3rd phase of construction. They eventually offered me a week vacation for 2 for $3000 US to cover accomodation and meals. (no airfare). Still didn’t budge. I was in Cancun for an all inclusive week at a 4 1/2 star hotel which included air, hotel, 24 hour room service, all drinks taxes for under $2000 CAN for 2 persons.

In the end, they did not provide any discounts and I did not book the dolphin adventure with them. They basically wasted the better part of a day on a 7 day vacation which as we all know includes 2 travel days. We didn’t get back to our hotel until 3p.m.

  9. Hello folks, I just posted my own website (yesterday) having had the exact same experience! Yes, there are ways to fight back! Please visit my website: http://www.elcidvacationfraud.com to see what I am doing about it, what you can do about it, and to collectively inform the public about El Cid in order to protect others from this scam and hurt El Cid where it counts - loss of business! The more hits and the more comments on the blog, the better! Thanks.

  11. Here is an update. I succeeded, through persistence, in contacting El Cid in Mazatlan by email. It took several weeks. I took an adult tone and neither whined nor threatened. I told them I no longer had the ability to pay and hoped for some way out.

I had a return email in which I was offered a Voluntary Surrender Letter, what they call a VSL. It cost me no more money, but I lost all of the cash I had paid until then. I had to be patient — nothing moves at USA speed in Mexico, even if it’s done by email. They were actually quite nice about it.

  12. Hello Everyone,
I have to say I’m in the same boat as everyone or worse.
I paid in full last summer and until this day I haven’t being able to use the points. I sent a nice e-mail today and hope that I can my money back. Please let me know if anyone gets information on how to get my money back.

  13. EL SHID…. that what I say…

They preyed on my Mom and Dad at the end of November and charged them 12% interest for 10 years after a $15K downpayment. These poor folks did NOT know what they were signing and are 73 (in very poor health) and 81 respectively. I figured out for them that if they use the “exclusive” EL SHID feature of doubling up their usage so it is used up in 10 years vs the 20 in the contract (yes this also means doubling the yearly Mtc. fees) this little piece of heaven …or hell in this case… will cost them $80,000 or $8,000 bucks per year….oh by the way…. that’s $100,000 Canadian. (16k mtc. fees + 36K original cost + 28K in interest)
For this cash, they can cruise for 20 days together … all inclusive… every year if you book the specials and last minutes.. IN VERANDA SUITE.
Jacob Coppel; Monica and that witch Indra Milan have taken my poor parents to the cleaners…. I am fighting hard to get them out of their contract! They are fully prepared to walk-away from their $15K downpayment and call it a bad nightmare vs throwing good money after bad…..
They have come back and said they have done everything they can and have offered 6 months interest free (I happen to know couples who got 18 months and were new)…. we got 12 earlier in the year …2008.
My wife and I are owners and have had a couple of great vacations at El SHID Marina in Mazatlan…. after this… I will never trust them again and am looking into selling.
As Phillip says…. If I don’t get satisfaction from these guys …. I will make it my life’s work to make sure people are informed.
Heck… I may even go to Mazatlan on vacation and spend the entire time educating other other unsuspecting Gringos about the real Montezuma’s Revenge…. you buy into EL Shid… and the shits never leaves you!

  14. An update to my comment from March 21st 2009. We have now resolved our issue with El Cid Vacations Club.

  15. I am becoming quite disillusioned and frustrated with many of these boards.

My wife and I have been in this battle for the past 6 years, trying for the first few years to actually use the damned timeshare; these past few to get rid of it.

We have tried everything from selling it, giving it away, and finally trying a transfer company (another rip-off.)

I have read many of these types of site, but none of them, nor the respondents seem to be willing to give us any information as to “HOW” they went about getting resolution.

Helga: I’m glad you are now resolved, but what process did you use? With whom did you speak?

Daniel: Who do I send the letter to? Is El Cid the same company throughout Mexico?

Phone number, addresses: please help those of us who are lost in the mountains of paperwork and unable to afford attorneys.

    PLEASE!!!!!

    Sincerely,

    Ken in Tucson

  16. Please, everyone, do not get involved in these time-share scams. El Cid runs great resorts, but they are running great scams as well–and have been doing the same scam for YEARS. Similar hotels run the same scam.

I got into one almost 7 years ago in Cozumel. They really have it down–they soup you up with a breakfast and an alcoholic drink of your choice. Then they set you up one-on-one with a salesman or saleslady–handsome or beautiful–and very well cultured. They even hire Americans to do the pitch, just to give you added confidence. They have an answer for every question. I signed on, but just to be sure, I asked them to sign a waiver that I would get a full refund if I changed my mind within the week. And after thinking about it for a few days, I crunched the numbers and concluded that it was a rip-off. I realized that with the interest I could be earning on the money I put down, I would accumulate enough for a vacation anywhere, and would not be restricted to them and their dubious partners. So, I backed out. But getting them to honor the waiver…whoa! First I had to sit around for about 3 hours, after which they issued me a Visa “refund” on a credit card slip that included no place for their signature. They didn’t submit it. When the refund did not show up on my credit card bill, I contacted my credit card company. They asked to see the original waiver, and based on that, they issued me a refund. Thank goodness I saved it.

In Cozumel, I saw the same scam going at their El Cid hotel. Well, I went in anyway, figuring I’d get the free breakfast and get a little get-back. Free? They took a $50 “deposit” which they said they would give back–but they claimed they had given me back but hadn’t. My aggressive wife raised quite a stink, and then the manager came up and was chewing out one of his employees, who broke out into tears claiming that she would now have to pay back the money–all a complete staged scene to pull on my heartstrings. SCAM, baby, SCAM. Don’t go NEAR these things. They aren’t worth your time and detract from an otherwise good vacation.

I should mention that I saw probably 50 people signing onto this nonsense the morning I was there. Their pitch is amazing. They must get 90%. STAY AWAY.

  19. Hi,
I am trying to get rid of my El Cid Marina timeshare and am having trouble getting anyone to return my calls on how to trasfer the timeshare sence I have an interested buying party. However they are not going to wait forever. I had no idea about this VSL (Letter) El Cid might offer. Can anyone help me with a contact name or extension so I can have this as an option. This company is a total scam and I should have known better…. as well as others I suppose. Thank you for any help anyone may provide. I can be reached at:

  21. This letter describes our encounter with EL CID LA CEIBA PROPERTY IN COZUMEL on March 2008.
We sat down with DAVID LEIGH BRYANT. Initially, he explained to us the benefits of buying a one bedroom unit time share plan, he then showed us on their website that we would receive 175,000 points reward for every $1,000.00 cash paid for cruises booked at 50 to 60% discount off the regular price. We decided to sign mainly on that factor with another representative, DEBRA EKLUND. She also CONFIRMED THE MONEY WE WOULD SAVE ON VACATIONS AND THE ACCUMULATIVE POINTS WE WOULD RECEIVE.
We were bitterly disappointed in late March when we tried to book four of our associates on a Carnival Cruise through El Cid. The price was virtually the same as Carnival web sites listed price. Even worse, we were totally MISREPRESENTED ON THE POINTS. Instead of receiving 525,000 points for a $4,000.00 cruise, we were told to receive only 35,000 points.
As soon as we discovered we had been mislead we e-mailed Debra Eklund on April to please cancel our membership and reverse the charge on our Bank of America credit card. After no response, I called El Cid in Cozumel and was told that I had to speak to Arturo Soto who handles cancellations. I called Arturo every day for at least two weeks and he would not take my call nor return it. Numerous e-mails back and forth with Mr. Soto have occurred since refusing to reverse the charges and cancel our membership.
It has been a constant strain on our marital relationship dueling over catching these charges and re-charges. We have spent hours and hours writing letters, making phone calls and faxes blaming each other over this whole sad episode then recently, having our excellent credit score lowered over something WE WERE MISLED AND MANIPULATED BY.
Do not go or attend any presentation with the El Cid Vacations Club, their only purpose is to steal your money, using MISLEADING INFORMATION AND NO ETHICAL SALES PRACTICES.

Could you please share what you did to get out?
    Thanks a ton.

  23. We have had a similar experience at El Cid Marina in Mazatlan and with Fernando Alonso Gonzales. We are trying to get our money back and will not honor the conrtract so will not be paying anything more to them.

In fact since we did not have a copy to read (our copy was on a CD that we couldn’t open)and only received the written copy when we returned home we are saying that we are in the 5 day period since we immediately e mailed them rescinding our contract after receiving it in the mail.

Unfortunately we have the credit card amount. which we are disputing with the help of a lawyer. Good luck to everyone and spread the word so that more people are not scammed by these con artists - and as Helga says -keep fighting and don’t pay another cent!

  24. They are a bunch of crooks! I have two memberships, one in Mazatlan and the other in the Riviera Maya, and they have done nothing but take money! They change the rules when they want and they charge your credit card or debit card with no valid reason! Don’t go to El Cid, anywhere!

  25. I have been a Mazatlan El Cid Vacations Club owner since 2000….I have to say that I have used my points every year and have gone to Mazatlan for the last 15 years and also also have enjoyed myself, my kids aged 10 - 15 love Mazatlan, we have stayed the El Moro and the Marina and love both…the people that work at my “Home” hotel (El Moro) have always gone out of their way for me and my family, we have actually became friends with our sales people over the years and they all go out of there way for us…find us rooms the day we check out so we can stay late…they have given upgrades due to any problems like “smoke smell” in the rooms, don’t like the view, they will move me and my family….over the years I have taken people to Mazatlan on my timeshare and again they have always loved it….I have been to Mexico at least 15x over the last 10 years and I would move there tomorrow. !!! I plan to retire in Mexico when I am 55…and it is very possible….Love Ya Mazatlan and my El Cid Timeshare forced me to go and I never regretted any of it….I am so sorry to hear all the bad news for other folks that have been there…but the more I read it seems that the problems come from the east side of Mexico not the west…..Love from Canada

  28. We too bought into the El Cid Vacation Plan when visiting ashore from our Cruise, we were just looking for a map on shore and stumbled upon their booth. Despite everything, we have throughly enjoyed our plan so far staying at the El Cid Resort in Cozmel, we then paid an extra $150 and stayed in Canada and had a wonderful time there, it was about 80 miles from Niagra Falls. The next year we paid an extra $150 and stayed a week in Kaui, again it was a wonderful time. Last year we went to Branson, Mo. and had a lovely time. Although we felt sickened by all the bad publicity about El Cid, once we have learned how to use the program, we have not been disappointed with the facilities. The down payment was the one bad thing when you consider you can usually get a week anywhere for what our annual fees are. We could have bought alot of vacations with the downpayment! I must admit though, if we had to do it all over again, we would not buy into a vacation plan. We are just trying to make the best of our situation with the hasty decision we made.

  29. I purchased a vacation membership from El Cid this past summer and unfortunatly I did not see these complaints first. I was just thinking about trying to book a vaction this summer and when I googled the El Cid name all these complaints came up under their site. Help, how do I get out of my contract??? Any advice in what my next step should be would be greatly appreciated.

  33. We had the same experience with El Cid-and Crise Line . We purchased a membership a few years ago. We exchanged points for Hawaii the first year but RCI had no record of it. It cost a plenty. We went back to El Cid the next year and spent 1 cold week- no heat. They gave us a wrist band which identified us as a target for the sales staff (again) Talked to us and we bought another vacation week for $5000. We decided to cancel the addtional membership within the 3 day period. I took a written cancellation letter to Fernando Alonso and handed it to him personally. I had to ask for a copy. He brought it to me. I asked for his signature which I could tell by his expression that he was angry although polite. El Cide was nothing more than a hotel- I could not see any benefits of being a member during our stay. Now that should have been the end of it. Fernando Alonso stated that they did not make the credit card charges-several weeks later CitiBank sided with us and refunded our deposit. Fernando Alonso called and apologized (the signed paper I sent to Citibank was the clincher). Fernando Alonso then offered to sell the addtional week for 1/2 as much which we politely declined. We still have the membership for the one week and its a bear to use it.

  35. Just say NO, NO, NO.
We stayed at the El Cid in Puerto Morelos just this March. Upon our arrival we were met by our meet and greet guy who was there to explain the hotel amenities which was very helpful. After about ten minutes of that, he moved into the great discounted deals for excursions he could get for us if we attended a 90 minute presentation. This little first meeting is normal at most resorts which is the first pitch at trying to sell you a time share er ah a vacation club membership. We just use them to get a crash course where everything is at the resort to get the most out of our money. He more or less told us we would be going - we told him that no we weren’t - well he didn’t like it and tried even harder to get us to go. Well, we don’t want a time share and never will so we just flatly said no thanks and walked away. You see they take advantage of polite tourists who are scared to say no or are trying to save a few bucks. When we walked away we then got a “well it is so unfortunate that you are so closed minded” comment from him. Well, we just laughed. As a side note, this resort every morning just before 9 am from their vacation club sales room would play very loud Survivor’s song Eye of the Tiger and all the sales people would standup and clap and cheer to the music. Sometimes they’d forget to close the door for this and we were able to see this for ourselves first hand - SLIMEY!! Of course a staff member who saw the doors open would quickly run over and close the door. I feel bad for those who got caught up in this. Hind sight is twenty twenty but please just say NO! It is easy and yes they may insult you or yell but who cares really. According to their motto song, you are nothing more than a challenge or fight to conquer.

    Tom from Canada

  36. Yes, it’s true. The bad and the good. El Cid is out to make a buck like every other business. They do marketing at the cruise stops in Mexico. So does RCI. We were ‘held captive’ by RCI in Playa del Carmen for 3 hours and a dinner, but said no to them. We were in no position to afford any of their packages at that time and still can’t take more than a week’s vacation per year. We had them down from $60,000 to $5,000 by the time we said our good-byes. I don’t remember what we would have received for that. It was a huge waste of our vacation time.

Several years later we cruised the Mexican Riviera and were tricked into losing more than half of our stop in Mazatlan with sales people. This time we could afford their 3rd offer and took it before seeing any warnings on websites like this one. We suckered for it. I say that because it hasn’t turned out to be what was promised to us. We were told we had enough points ($154,000) to vacation either 2 weeks a year for two people or one week with air fare. No! It’s really one week with extra points to roll to the next year. It definitely falls short. So, what is good about it?

The good remarks are true, too. We had time to use just one of the bonus certificates we were awarded for signing up. We went to Hever, England for a week and it was fantastic! We have found that the points work well for properties only. The ones we’ve tried have been lovely. Points aren’t worth more than a few dollars on airfare or tickets because there are limits on the percentage of the price with partners that can be purchased by points. So, we are trying to make the best of it like Maggie.

The resorts are lovely. The people are good to us. Each vacation costs the price of air, food, and fun. Is it a deal? I don’t think so–not compared to package deals online. Does it get us to go? Yes. Since we went to England on the certificate, we rolled our points for that year ($30 more) into the next and had enough points to get two 4-occupant suites in Cozumel and take our married children for a week. We have points left over and plan to either roll them to next year or borrow on next years to go again this year. (But members can only move points one year either way.) Not all bad.

I’m glad some of you have been able to get out of your contracts. We never tried but thought about it. It must be hard to work with another country which has less consumer protection than we have in the USA. This fact alone should have been a red flag to us, but wasn’t.

I appreciate the comments on this site and take hope in what “From Canada” says. We want to use some of the RCI properties and expand our options.

Has anyone bought a trial pkg? We did for two vacations. We were told we get points, enough for a two bedroom suite. Does anyone know where to look to find or see your points. (had on the computer when they were selling)Made a payment down with monthly payments for a year. They didn’t get us with the long term one we just couldn’t afford that one.

  40. Hi

In November/09 I purchased a Trial membership for $1500 US, has anyone purchased a Trial membership and have had problems? I called today to book a vacation in Feb/11 and they are supposed to call me tomorrow so we will see what happens. I don’t think we will have any problems because they want to get us back and try to get us to purchase a timeshare but let me know if you have purchased a trial and have had any problems.

  42. Help. My wife and I were scammed in Mazatlan in 2008. We paid thousands down on an El Cid VC ‘membership’ and financed $14,000 more. Now we cannot even GIVE IT BACK, letting them keep our down payment and loan payments already made (over $10,000)! We are selling our membership on the secondary market at less than 25% of what we paid for it and no one seems to want it. Has anyone ever talked them into just taking the money already paid and letting the ‘membership’ revert back to them? I have contacted agencies and attorneys who advertise success at this but I am terrified of getting scammed AGAIN. It is true, it costs more to use El Cid VC than to book your own vacation (when you add up the total cost). Help!
