The state screams "you aren't wanted here". What happens to a person who commits a minor traffic violation in Geogia but fails to pay the fine in time ? A warrant for your arrest. That's right, your going to jail. You do an illegal u-turn, in the middle of the night, in an industrial park, on a road that is a dead end because it hasn't been completed yet ? That's right, you're going to get a ticket - and it'll turn into a warrant for your arrest if you don't pay it in time. The answer to this ? Just don't go to Georgia. Don't buy their goods. Don't go to the states that neighbor them (because it's expeditable there). They don't need you or your money - you don't need them. Georgia as a whole is a place to skip - altogether. We prefer the north end and stay at Oceanfront Cottage Rentals at least twice a year and it's lovely. The homes are posh, quiet and some have pools. The staff is wonderful and they hook us up with cool things going on during our stay at the island. We have five children and love that family time. We bike, dolphin tours with Capt. Mike, kayak, take photos, walking tours, swim and walk on their re-nourished beaches. We dine around town, Cafe Loco and A.J.'s otherwise we cook in the gourmet kitchens. Sandra Bullock, The Afflecks, John Cougar Mellencamp and many others love the vibe of laid back, gracious chill. it's less than 4 hours from Atlanta and perfect getaway. Breakfast in Atlanta get there in time for lunch on Tybee. Our friends have stayed at the DeSoto Beach Hotel on the main drag on Butler, often and it's clean and lovely right on the beach. Their B&B next door looks just like Key West with huge ferns out front. Great lemonade. So try Tybee again, the beaches in October are perfect. We love Tybee in the off season and their campy events are so much fun. Pirate Fest, Mardi Gras Parade, Beach Bum Water Parade and St. Patty's...so many good times. Yes, Ocean Plaza is awful and it's true, but that is not the NORM. Savannah is not full of gnats and has amazing dining, photo opps, shopping and a vibe all it's own. We love our day trips there. The weather was actually cold the first day or so and then delightfully warm (not hot, not humid at all). No bugs. We stayed in the old town area and it was lovely. Took the bus to the rental car agency and the people couldn't have been more helpful and friendly. No bad smells, even by the water...we stayed near Factors Walk...I would recommend a visit there, at lesat to the old town. We didn't get much time on Tybee Island, but had a nice meal at the Ocean Plaza. Guess it's all in the perspective. My husband and I spent a week in Savannah in October 2008 and had a great time! Fine Living, a network that is part of Scripps (HGTV, Food) says it's aweful too. I've lived there and should know. Crime is higher per capita than Atlanta. Racial tensions are high as the blue bloods can't pull their heads out of their butts. Public schools are atrocious. And there are gnats year round that prevent you from doing anything outdoors. The humidity is that of a swamp, as is the smell. The paper plant may be tolerable on days when the wind blows in a favorable direction, but the swamp gas still permeates the brain. Skip Savannah unless it's to get wasted downtown for two nights max, without kids. Savannah as a whole is a place to skip. It's an old hotel that they recently remodeled. I know it's hard to imagine how much worse it could have been before the remodeling with it in such poor shape today. I've never seen the beach itself in the way you describe. There are also some other chain hotels on the island and some great local restaurants, so don't let the comments about Ocean Plaza put you off about Tybee. I paid $299.00 a night and it was aweful. The keg party happening 2 floors above my car was throwing cigarettes on my car. I now have small burns on the hood of my car.
