The Trump is a brand new hotel. First, the basics: not surprisingly, it’s designed to reflect an over-the-top air of ritziness that often crosses over into gaudiness. The lobby is large and opulent. My room was comfortable, albeit designed more for decor than function. (Operative words…opulent and gaudy.) Room service was decent, nothing stellar. The restaurant and the food showed more attention to appearances than taste. And that, in a nutshell, describes the Trump. It’s all about appearances. Meanwhile, the little stuff gets overlooked. Cellular service in the rooms was non-existent, and the concierge admitted it was a known issue. (Sorry, but in 2008, that should be a no-brainer.) They nickel-and-dime you on little stuff that, in a hotel of this caliber, should be included. It begins with your arrival, where you’re informed there is NO self-parking area…valet only. (You’re not informed that you’re being charged $15/day for it.) Internet access is another $12/day….come on now, I know some hotels still do this but an “upscale” hotel like this one should include it. The pool and spa are just okay…no more elegant than the mid-range strip hotels, less so than the high-priced ones (though the spa’s more expensive). Oh, and forget accessing your bill or checking out on the room’s TV….that was down too. The non-gaming aspect is nice…great to not have to walk through a casino constantly. But it’s no longer unique, and the Renaissance does it better. I know Trump is planning an adjacent tower with condos, and it’s all part of a master plan to have a presence on the strip. But while his “shtick” plays well on TV and in some cities (NYC, Dubai), it’s a bit ineffective in the glare of Vegas, where every other hotel tries as hard or harder to please.
